Common Questions

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a sewer lateral inspection? +

A sewer lateral inspection uses a small waterproof camera inserted into your sewer line to visually assess the condition of the pipe. We can identify cracks, root intrusions, blockages, corrosion, and other issues that can't be detected from the surface. You receive a detailed report with findings and recommendations.

How long does a sewer inspection take? +

Most standard residential sewer lateral inspections take 1–2 hours, including setup, the camera run, and the walkthrough of findings. Complex situations or longer lines may take longer. You'll receive your written report same day.

What is a point-of-sale compliance inspection? +

Several sanitary districts in the Bay Area — including the Castro Valley Sanitary District, Ironhouse Sanitary District, and others — require a sewer lateral inspection as a condition of selling a property. We provide these compliance inspections with expedited turnaround to keep your transaction on schedule. Learn more about compliance markets →

What is hydrojetting and when do I need it? +

Hydrojetting uses high-pressure water (typically 3,000–4,000 PSI) to thoroughly clean the inside of sewer pipes. It's the most effective solution for stubborn grease buildup, debris accumulation, and persistent slow drains. Unlike snaking, which only punches a hole through blockages, hydrojetting scours the pipe walls clean.

What's the difference between trenchless and open-trench sewer replacement? +

Open-trench replacement involves digging a trench along the entire length of the damaged pipe, replacing it, and then backfilling. Trenchless replacement (pipe bursting or pipe lining) replaces or rehabilitates the old pipe from small access points at either end, preserving your landscaping, driveway, and yard. Trenchless is often less disruptive and can be more cost-effective depending on your situation.

Why do I need a sewer cleanout? +

In older homes, the absence of a sewer cleanout means plumbers must access the sewer from inside the house — sometimes requiring toilet removal. A properly installed cleanout gives exterior access to your sewer line, simplifies maintenance, enables backwater overflow prevention, and directs any backups outside rather than indoors.

Maintenance Tips

Keep Your Sewer Healthy

🌱

Mind Your Trees

Tree roots are the #1 cause of sewer line damage. If you have mature trees near your sewer line, annual camera inspections can catch root intrusion before it becomes a costly repair.

🚫

Don't Flush These

"Flushable" wipes, paper towels, feminine products, and cooking grease are the most common causes of preventable sewer blockages. Only human waste and toilet paper should go down the drain.

📅

Schedule Regular Inspections

Industry recommendation: residential sewer lines should be inspected every 18–22 years, or sooner if you're experiencing slow drains, backups, or odors. Preventive inspections cost far less than emergency repairs.
